It’s a bright, sunny, most lovely autumn morning and the horses look pictures in the sunshine. The first two lots have been on the Rubbing House polytrack, moving well and the reports from all the riders is that they are in very good spirits. We have also ridden two or three yearlings around the school and yard and we are now starting to get a good string of them together to go out on the heath. I am going to have a big push now to get them all going and have them cantering on Hamilton Hill before Christmas.

We are going to have runners nearly every day this week starting with today at Newcastle in the 1.50. Velvet Voice runs in the one mile fillies’ maiden and this is our first runner on the new tapeta surface at Newcastle. Stevie Donohoe takes the ride. Both divisions of this maiden look very hot, but we were pleased with how she ran on her debut at Kempton. We are sure she has improved since her first run and I am expecting her to run with credit today.

The December foal sale finished at the weekend with figures similar to last year but off a reduced number. There have been a lot of foals not sold and the stallion fees for the majority are still much too high. There are only fifteen or so stallions which people can make a profit on even with a good mare and a very good foal. I am sure there will be some readjustments, especially within Ireland, but there will be once again a lot of disappointed small breeders, who we should be encouraging, go out of it. The mare sale starts today and with one or two choicely bred ones and a big draft from Godolphin and Juddmote there will be some high figures once again, but the majority will sell for under the value of their covering nominations, which will be another warning sign. Let’s hope the BHA and the government can get the finances right in the spring as that is the only way the industry will start to move the other way. If it wasn’t for the very few rich owners we would be in a perilous state.
