Cantering on the Rubbing House polytrack

It’s another bone chilling morning with a very hard frost and although the sunshine is out as we write this piece, I don’t think it is going to warm up very much all day. We have been using the Rubbing House polytrack for our cantering work this morning. It was a very busy part of the heath as everybody was trying to use it at the same time. There were no real mix-ups and common sense was prevailing well. On mornings like these everybody just gets on and canters.

Our runner yesterday at Newcastle was a bit disappointing. I am sure it was the right way to ride her to go off in front, but she ran well below her form at Redcar. It may have been a bit better race than she has been running in and we will be trying her back over shorter in the not too distant future.

We have two runners today starting at Lingfield this afternoon with Topaling who runs in the 2.40 the one mile four furlong handicap. I don’t think the handicapper has been very kind to her as he had not dropped her for several runs. This week, at last, he dropped her 3lbs but today is still off her old mark. As we all know she is capable of being competitive if she decides to put it in and will be fitter for her run a week ago. We then move on to Kempton where Peeps runs in the 7.25. I have put the blinkers on her today as she has been slowly away the last few times. However, we practiced the other day in the stalls with the blinkers on and she came out well. She has got the ability to run a good race here if she jumps off on terms. Let’s hope it’s a going day.

It was another busy day at the December sales yesterday with the dam of the Derby winner making £2 million and another mare making over a million. There was plenty of money once again for the higher end mares with the better pedigrees, or dams of black type winners, but the whole sale is well down on average and median at present and I think we will be seeing a big readjustment within the breeding industry over the next few years.
