"Dance is a delicate balance between perfection and beauty."
It’s been a very damp weekend with plenty of rain yesterday and although we haven’t got much this morning, it certainly feels damp in the air. Once again there is no wind, something we have not had much of this winter, but I am sure we will be getting plenty soon to make up for the lack of it. It usually averages out, well that’s what my farmer friends tell me. We have a few more staff in this morning, which is great, and we are able to get some good cantering work into the majority of the horses. My feeder is off on holiday again so for eight days yours truly will be dishing out the meals, starting at half past four this morning, but it is one of the jobs I love doing and the horses love to see me when I wake them up in the dark.
Both the maidens ran with promise at Lingfield last Friday. Gee Sixty Six travelled well and just got a bit tired. He was drawn much better than Astrostorm who was always in the kickback, but certainly finished with purpose and there are plenty of races to be won with these two. We will be introducing another three-year-old this week and should have a few more runners as well.
It was terribly sad to see Many Clouds collapse and lose his life after an epic race at Cheltenham on Saturday. The Grand National winner had put every bit of effort he had into the race and he will be a great loss to all his connections. I think it was a heart attack and you can never predict when this is going to happen, whether in humans or animals. They can die in their stables at home, or on the race track, very similar to humans who die in bed or out exercising. It is just terribly sad.
The BHA has just sanctioned what action the handicapper can take in flat conditions races. Only the winner or any horse that has run more than four times can have its handicap mark raised. This, they think, will encourage trainers to run horses against other higher rated oppositions. It’s an idea thought up in hope rather than judgement. These conditions races on the flat are always small fields and will continue to be so. We need more claiming races, whether it is higher or lower grade and claiming beforehand. Give that a trial. It may work.
