On Southfields grass

After a showery weekend, it now looks to be a settled week ahead. The rain has certainly done a lot of good as the grass and gardens have started to fly up. I have even had people complaining that the gallops aren’t open, but I have had to tell them that the ones that are open are in perfect condition and are great for galloping on. Trainers and farmers are never happy. We have been using the grass canter on Southfields this morning and have cantered over a mile on perfect turf. We also used the Southfield Round polytrack for a few of them. All has gone well and with our new travelling head girl, Holly, in situ, we are starting to fire on all cylinders, although I will not be having many runners this week.

I didn’t run the two at Ripon because the ground was certainly on the softer side and the Clerk of the Course had not updated the ground as it was happening. Certainly Ripon is one of the courses that don’t seem to worry about trainers and their communication about their ground needs to get better. With the BHA website now, there is no need for big gaps between updating. I am sure everywhere will dry up this week and quite quickly if the high temperatures forecast are anything to go by.

American racing always baffles me as there seems to be different result every time, especially in the big races as the Preakness Stakes showed this weekend. The winner of the Kentucky Derby finished nearer last than first and I am sure it is something to do with the different rules in each state, i.e. what they can and cannot run on. It is far better to have a completely drug free regime and stick by it. It is beyond me why trainers have to use drugs to make horses run quicker.
