It's been a very overcast morning and we have had one or two heavy showers as well, but it is brightening and looks as if the rest of the day will be fine. The forecast for tomorrow is for it to rain all day and the ground will certainly be soft or have soft in the going description for the next week. We have been getting on well this morning with a new rider turning up and I have just taken on another one who is starting tomorrow. At present I am doing the feeding once again so if anyone needs a call at 4.30 just let me know!

We were absolutely delighted with Astroshadow last night at Beverley where the trip and ground suited her perfectly and she kept on strongly to be second at an enormous price.

We have one runner today at Chelmsford. Topalova runs in the 8.30 the two mile handicap. She has been quite consistent and it's been nearly three months since her last run. This outing will put her cherry ripe, but I'm hoping she can perform with great credit tonight. We are also taking Stellekaya on the box who will be having a stalls test. She was very good the other day at home and let's hope it all goes smoothly.

The BHA has just announced the fixture list for 2018 which unbelievably is up again with another 11 fixtures. Evening meetings have gone up by 30 and it looks to me that the racecourses and the bookmakers are pulling the strings. The BHA's chief operating officer tells us prize money will be increased in the lower levels with an appearance money scheme paid down to 8th place. The racecourses and bookmakers will love this as they get the media rights money with 8 or more runners. Minimum value races are hoped to be at least £6000, but where the wording says "most races" it starts to ring alarm bells. Once again this looks a big muddle to me. They are hoping to get the new levy money but nothing has been finalised yet as you will have read in my earlier blogs. I hope you read Phil's financial piece last Friday. It says it all about the state of prize money and why owners are on the decline.

It was interesting to see that Arrogate, the world's top racehorse, flopped when running at Del Mar on Saturday. Evidently he was fine after the race according to his trainer. It just goes to show that every horse can have an off day, plus my old addage that when you are in that top grade it can take a lot more out of a horse both physically and especially mentally. Let's hope this great horse can get back to his best.
