The Singspiel ex Humility filly sets off from the Exeter ride

"Great ambition is the passion of a great character. Those endowed with it may perform very good or very bad acts. All depends on the principals which direct them."

Having a good lunge and behaving impeccably

Another mild morning but still very dark first thing. I will be delighted to have that extra hour in bed on Sunday morning, so don't forget to put your clocks back on Saturday night; fortunately, it will make it that much lighter in the mornings.

Crossing the Moulton Road on the way home

Both runners ran with great credit yesterday. Watch Chain ran as well as we could have expected from his bad draw and he certainly stayed the 7 furlongs well, in fact, it looked to me as if he would get a mile. My plan was to cut him after this run but, I think now, I will keep him going, as it looks like he could win another race or two, albeit at this lower level. Mystery Star has always been a high-class horse and, after winning this race off 95, he will certainly go to nearer a 100 once again: not bad for a horse who only cost £16,000. He did it really well and has a good record on the all-weather but the only problem now is that there will be very few races for him; he may just get an entry in the November handicap next Saturday at Doncaster. I was delighted for Richard Hughes and he went on to ride another winner, so is now only six behind - it could still get interesting.

The Acclamation ex Housekeeper filly being lunged

Two runners today, both two year old colts. Old Boy Ted, who runs in the 1.50 pm race, has had two runs so far without troubling the judge but he is a great big, backward horse, who I have always liked and we will not see the best of him until next season. Dictate, who makes his debut in the 2.20 pm race, the second division of the maiden, is another who has done nothing but grow all year and is a great big, scopey colt by Araafa. He is quite well related  but is still very weak and I will be surprised if he gets involved today.

 Then, being long-reined home
