It's a hazy start to the day

It’s a warm morning, with the temperature set to soar by midday. East Anglia will be the warmest place in Great Britain and 30 degrees is not out of the question. If you are on the coast, on a boat, or just having a normal bank holiday, it will be glorious, but as usual on these days, all the horsemen in the industry are working.

The horses have been using the Rubbing House canter and Hamilton Hill canter as the grass on Southfields is now too firm. We have got one or two away today and with the runner at Southwell, who had to leave early, we have been short on the ground, but two of the stud lads came down to help and we have got everything back on track. It is great when the yard and the stud can work together and everybody gets on so well.

Koin was slowly away again yesterday and just followed them up in her own time. She will have another run reasonably quickly and although this looked very moderate, I am sure she will win something when handicapped and over a much further distance. The two races she has run in have been way above average and there will be plenty of winners come out of the race yesterday.

We have one runner today on the fibresand at Southwell. Astroshadow runs in the 3.45, the two mile handicap. She ran a good race last time behind one that has won again since, but the big question mark is will she handle the fibresand and will she handle the kick back? If she does, she should have a chance if reproducing her Beverley form.

The York Ebor meeting came to an end on Saturday with some exciting finishes once again and even a dead heat to close the meeting. After a slow start, I got the hang of it well and came out with a respectable total, after having £10 on every race. I don’t know what happened to Richard, but he wasn’t up to his usual standard and he will have to burn the midnight oil when the next competition comes around. It is great fun though and there are quite a lot of people who want to join in, so we may make a bit more of a competition in future.

The Newmarket team are well ahead with the fundraising and we have raised 53% of our target in the big commentary competition on 23rd September. I am still in practicing mode and now know which race I am going to commentate on. I think I am lucky, as I have got the first race, the one mile, two-year-old fillies’ maiden, which means I will be over and done with quickly and not have time to compare myself to others. There is plenty of practicing going on but it is all for a great cause and will be good fun. To help the cause please donate at the link below
