According to the forecast, East Anglia is going to be the warmest and driest place in the country today. It is certainly starting to get warmer and we have a clear blue sky. We have been cantering close to home this morning, and with a full complement of staff in, other than one who has gone on his holidays, everything is working smoothly.

Astroshadow hated every minute of yesterday and you know cantering down on the fibresand whether you are going to act on it or not. If you could withdraw them at the start, I think I would have done. Although Joey gave her a very sympathetic ride, she was quite distressed afterward and was quite wobbly. The vets on course were very good and we were throwing buckets of water on her to get her cooled down for at least a quarter of an hour. Her heart rate was quite high as well.

For the life of me, I can’t see why they can’t turn Southwell into a polytrack course, which would make it one of the best courses for horses in the country. The surface is tired and they do get flooded a lot, but fibresand is much cheaper than polytrack and I think that says it all. For a bank holiday Monday it was very poor prize money as well. I think the most valuable race was just over £3,000 and when the course is getting a minimum of £12,000 in media rights money per race, it is a very poor show. I will give Astroshadow plenty of time to recover, she will be in the paddock all week, and I am sure she will bounce back once back out on the turf.

I see Aidan O’Brien is involved in a big court case about how the labour in racing stables works in Ireland. If you take the effort to read the article in the Racing Post on page 5 today, you will see that the prosecutors, like the majority of people, have no idea how a racing yard functions and what the horses mean to the staff involved. This is political correctness and health and safety gone mad. If they win the case, it will devastate the whole industry in Ireland as the staff needed will be horrendous and costs will escalate out of all proportions.
