It’s been raining overnight and there must have been more than expected as most of the fast ground gallops are shut and the racecourse have changed its going description from good, to good to soft. It is the start of the three day Cambridgeshire meeting today and there is quite a lot of activity already around the town and racecourse. I have galloped a few two-year-olds Across The Flat which was walking very good, but the boys reported that it was softer in the dips. All has gone well.

I see the gaming machine problem is now starting to get aired in public, with the Paddy Power Betfair chief executive stating that £10 should be the limit for all bets. I think the other bookmakers don’t really agree and the government will be making a decision in the not too distant future. These machines make a fortune for the bookmakers and they will be very reluctant for their takings to go down. Their take on it is that shops would shut if the machines weren’t making good profits and that consequently, media rights would slip to the racecourses, which in turn affects prize money. It is all a roundabout of what Bill O’Gorman says, ‘it is just recycling the dole money’, but I think a sensible solution should be found.

There is a good article by Steve Dennis today about why don’t the trumpets sound for De Sousa and why he will be at Epsom at the weekend, when all the jockeys of note will be at Chantilly for the Arc. Silvestre is what I call a one hundred percenter in that you get that every time he rides, in every race, come what may and that is why he will be champion jockey again this year. He has had, and lost, some big jobs, and I am not sure why, he maybe hasn’t had the luck to get on that one champion racehorse, but nobody should ever be worried about putting him on in any race.
