It’s a bright spring like morning with the temperature holding up ok and very little wind. We have got rain forecast for later on and tomorrow. Everybody who should be in is in and all is going well. All the horses have been cantering on the polytracks Racecourse Side. As I said yesterday I can’t wait to start doing fast work on the turf, but at present it is still too soft. There is not much grass growth and the racecourse has put frost covers down, which makes crossing the racecourse more difficult. It always amazes me that the heath and the racecourse have two different teams of workers, but all working for the same firm, The Jockey Club. It has never made sense to me.

Indian Red didn’t run too badly last night. He was beaten under a couple of lengths and maybe we just didn’t go quickly enough on him and stretch the field, but he still ran another sound race and is in good form. I think the turf will suit him and there is a good series of races at Pontefract that may be just up his street. Also I have schooled him over hurdles and he certainly jumps those well, but the ground will need to dry up before we give him an entry.

Taking in the surroundings

Cheltenham got off to a great start racing wise yesterday, but reading the Dikler in the Racing Post today, it sounds like it was a bit of a farce. There was no commentary in the bars for the first race, the Tote machines were all down and the queues for the bars were even longer than normal with what he described as “clueless staff”. As the Dikler says how long have they had to prepare for this? Our tipping competition produced a few winners and a few near misses. The standings at present are MHT minus £35.01 and Richard plus £21.66.
