cantering up Hamilton Hill

It's an overcast cool morning but at least it's dry. I've been in since 4.20 feeding as Tim is not very well at all, and hopefully he will be seeing his doctor today. In the office poor Di is also off with problems plus we have one non runner on the riding front. So the day is not going as well as I had hoped. All the yard staff are in though and the riders who are here are cheerful and getting on cantering the horses. Six lots will be the morning's work.

We have one runner today. Velvet Voice runs in the 4.55, the mile and two furlongs, at Wolverhampton. She hated the surface at Southwell on her last outing, and we are hoping that the tapeta will suit her better. She is drawn well in four and stays well. She could be in the frame at a massive price.

I see in the Racing Post today there's a story about two old racehorses being sold at York horse sales. One is 14 and the other is 15. It has sparked an outcry on social media over welfare concerns. The trainer in question states that, "They have to go to auction to be sold before I can take the owner to court." To my mind this brings into question how training fees are paid and whether in any dispute the BHA should have some mechanism in place to satisfy both parties. Nobody knows the ins and outs of this particular case, but it does happen on a frequent basis that trainers are owed money. We have just had a very high profile example which I believe is still going on. It's understandable that the trainer has to take action, but wouldn't it be much better just to find these two servants a proper retirement home. There are such good retraining centres especially the one we support, The Thoroughbred Retraining Centre, which would be perfect for these old warriors. (www.thoroughbredrehabilitationcentre.co.uk)
