It’s dull and overcast this morning and as we write this it is still dry but rain is forecast for most of the day. Hopefully we can get the majority of the horses in and out before it starts. We have a new rider in today which is a great help as he can get out an extra five horses. Good canters on the polytracks are the exercise of the day and all is going well so far.

Indian Red didn’t get the trip yesterday, but he was very buzzed up and got a bit warm in the primaries, which is not like him at all. The stables at Pontefract are very near a school and with the children out at playtime playing and shouting, a number of horses got quite unsettled. He had a good blow after the race and travelled back well.

We have two runners today at Brighton, another one of these twilight meetings. Pageant Master is our first runner at 4.50. It’s a two-year-old maiden race with only one of the field ever stepping foot on a racetrack. It’s impossible to know how they will all run as this is a completely different experience for them, but Pageant Master is in great form at home and is definitely ready for this run. Whatever happens he will learn from this. Saint Anthony is our next runner in the 7.05. He shows plenty in his work at home and we have stepped him up in trip, which I feel will suit. I have also applied blinkers this time out to concentrate his mind. He may need further in the future.

I see today the Punchestown Festival starts and runs through to Saturday with 38 races scheduled and prize funding of over €3 million with Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott fighting for the crown of top trainer. The festival always has a party atmosphere and is great craic. During the week 120,000 people will be in attendance and they manage to make their way through 45,000 burgers, 38,000 portions of chips and 25,000 ice creams. If you ever get the chance to experience the festival you will have a fantastic few days and I highly recommend you going.
