The sun is shining but it's still quite chilly

It’s another glorious blue sky morning but the temperature is still quite low meaning jackets are definitely needed. There is a heavy dew on the grass which would make your feet wet if not wearing the right footwear. Everybody out on the heath seems in good form today, but that is usually the case when the sun is shining. We have been using the polytracks close to home with two canters for first and second lot and the remaining lots doing one good canter. All has gone well so far.

Talk is still going on regarding the Champion Novice Stakes at Punchestown on Tuesday. Both the stewards and jockey have now explained the reasons for this bizarre action when veering across the track taking out another horse at the final fence. Plenty of theories have been bandied about, with a lot of them calling the sport crooked. This in itself is not good for our industry and in my opinion the reports should have been clearer from the start. It would appear that jockey Paul Townsend, who was riding with his head down, thought he heard shouting to bypass the fence. In that split second he made the decision to move across the track, before realising his mistake. By that time it was too late. If it was explained to everybody straight after the steward’s enquiry our industry wouldn’t be getting so much stick. With other ideas in people’s minds I think this will be talked about for some time yet.

The foals are continuing to thrive and with the recent warm weather they have been spending plenty of time out in the paddocks at Dullingham. The grass is growing well and it’s lovely to see their heads down as you drive past them. We have just the one mare left to foal this season and her due date is today. However, history tells us that she will be at least another two weeks until she has a foal at foot. Coverings are going well, with several mares now scanned in foal. It is crazy how time flies and before you know it we will be getting ready to foal this lot down.
