Pulling out

Astrobreeze and Velvet Voice

It’s a lovely start to the day but we can expect some cloud cover as the morning goes on. There is no rain forecast though and the temperature feels to be quite pleasant, although it is slightly breezy.  Warm, dry weather is expected for at least the next week. We are using the polytracks on Racecourse Side today and all has gone well.

True Calling

It’s the Guineas weekend this coming Saturday and Sunday with the declarations for the 2000 Guineas today and the 1000 Guineas tomorrow. Michael Prosser, the clerk of the course at Newmarket, is expecting the ground to be good. It is a fantastic meeting over the two days with five Group races and two Listed. It is the first of the five Classics and a race that everybody watches with great excitement and interest. With Ryan Moore riding in the Kentucky Derby, the favourite, Gustav Klimt, will be ridden by Seamie Heffernan. It would be lovely to see a Newmarket trainer in the winner’s enclosure. After all we are the home of British Racing.

The Jockey Club, which operates 15 racecourses around the UK, has announced a record annual turnover of £201.1m for 2017. Profits also rose which allowed prize money to grow by 10%. Simon Bazalgette, the chief executive of the Jockey Club, was quoted as saying "Looking ahead, we are increasing prize money further in 2018 and we are continuing to invest in the experience we offer to customers and participants”. This is great for our sport as every penny made is put back into racing. Let's hope that the powers that be will distribute this extra money thoughout all tiers of racing which will encourage new owners.
