"Faith makes things possible, not easy."

Cantering on Hamilton Hill

It's an overcast day with a few showers forecast for later. We had a really good downpour yesterday which has certainly helped everything. We have had a good morning with the horses, with a full complement of staff in plus an added jockey. We have had two lots of fast work on the Cambridge Road. Most of the rest have been cantering on Southfields Round.

Velvet Vision

We have no runners today, but have two tomorrow at Chelmsford when Astromerry and Astrosparkle run in the same race, the mile fillies' maiden at 1.30. Both these will be in need of the experience, and the outing will do them good for their future careers.

Garrison Law

A milestone  was reached this week when Jamie Spencer rode himself into the top twenty of the most winning jockeys in the U.K. with 2,069 victories. There were plenty of tributes paid and the 38 year old jockey played down his achievements, but he admitted it was, "...nice to join such an illustrious group". Over 2,000 winners is a huge credit to him but he has a long way to go to catch up Sir Gordon Richards, who even Pat Eddery and Lester couldn't match. Sir Gordon's wins numbered 4,870 between 1921 and 1954. This outstanding total was done without the expansive fixture list we have today, without evening meetings and without a motorway network. It just shows what an amazing achievement this was. and I don't think we shall ever see his like again.

Off to the washdown box

Last week saw a bookmaker produce a list of whom they considered to be the movers and shakers in our industry under 35 years of age. Today in the Post Tom Kerr has done the same. There are plenty of young people in the game and there is opportunity for everybody of any description. All that is needed is a love of racing and of horses and a dedicated work ethic. The world is then their oyster.
