It's an overcast morning but as yet we have had no rain and it is still around 10 degrees. If the forecast is anything to go by we are in for the first cold snap of the season, and don't forget the clocks go back this weekend. We have plenty of people in this morning and we have done a bit of fast work with the first two lots on the Peat Moss turf and Cambridge Road polytrack. It's the time of year when we are sorting out the ones who will be having a break , the ones who are going to continue to run on the all weather and over hurdles, and the ones that are going to the sales or find new homes doing an alternative equine discipline.

It will be a great weekend of racing once again with the Group One two year old race at Doncaster, the two day Cheltenham meeting and we have Winx trying to win the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley for the fourth time. I think our own Matt Chapman has been upsetting the Aussies with his thoughts on the great mare, but he might have to swallow his pride if hopefully she can do it again. She has been the Frankel of Australia and has been on the front pages of their newspapers as well as the back.

There's a big article today in the Racing Post about the industry's association with politicians. Horse welfare is at the top of the list. In my opinion it's all about education and I should love to bring a cross section of M.P.'s to Newmarket to see for themselves how well our horses are looked after here, the amazing training facilities and the world class veterinary attention available in the town. They would see an unbelieveably high standard of care and racehorses are without any doubt the most pampered of  horses. The whip use is another issue altogether, and we have talked about it many times on this site. I am certain the rules want tightening up and the penalties executed properly.

We are bringing in the filly yearlings from the stud this morning to start their education. We are delighted with how the colts are getting on and I am sure the fillies will please us too. They are a good bunch. The weanlings have taken independence from their dams very well, and we shall be moving them over to Deer Park soon and so the cycle continues. It is amazing how quickly the year goes by.
