Clipping in full swing

Wednesday, 21 November 2018

"The trouble with weather forecasting is that it’s right too often for us to ignore it and wrong too often for us to rely on it."

Patrick Young.

True Calling pulled out for exercise

It's a bright, sunny and cold morning and we may have a few showers as the day goes on. After yesterday's work morning we have had a much quieter day staying on Southfields Round with the majority of the horses. I shall be schooling a couple at third lot up at the Links. We have great schooling facilities here at Newmarket and, although there are a few dual purpose trainers in town, there is certainly room for a specialist.

At this time of year the clippers are in constant use and Wendy our travelling girl has been in full flight for the last fortnight. She is now onto the last of the yearlings, but it's a bit like the Forth Bridge as when you come to the end you immediately go back to the beginning and start again. Clipping is actually a great skill and a well turned out horse makes all the difference. Manes need pulling properly and the horses feel much better for the pampering.

Walking home

I see Bet 365 have announced soaring profits up 33% to £682 million. I know that this is not all from horseracing as they bet on everything with their mobile revenue growing enormously, but it just goes to show how much money the bookmakers make. Although they no doubt pay the correct amount of tax which swells the government coffers, I just think there is something wrong somewhere and why doesn't a lot more of it filter back into racing.
