Velvet Voice

We have no frost this morning as it has been an overcast night, and the temperature was not too bad even at first lot. It looks as if it will be a proper spring day which is great for working in but trainers, like farmers, are never happy and I would love it to rain. I have told you before I am sure we are in for a deluge as we are so far behind the average rainfall for the time of year.  It's a busy morning with a runner today but everybody is in and working well. Everything is ticking over smoothly.

We have one runner today in the 4.30 at Southwell. Astrojewel runs in the 6 furlong handicap. She is drawn well, is a winner on the surface, and Paul Mulrennan takes the ride . We won't be making as much use of her as the jockey did last time. This is a drop back in trip as well and she is in good form. I expect a creditable performance.

There are two things of interest to come out of the the Racing Post today. The first is that another small betting operator has gone to the board. It just goes to show that it is very similar to the training world in that the big are getting bigger and the small ones are finding it harder to compete. The world of high tech seems to be progressing at a very fast rate and I should think within ten years all off-course gambling will be done on line.

The second is that I see the interviews for the new BHA chairman have gone ahead over the last few days. The Racing Post tells us that a headhunting group was involved in the recruitment. I have not seen this position advertised at all, although they say it was on the BHA's own website. I just hope the people who are selecting get this crucial position right. It will be fascinating to see who emerges.

Spring has definitely sprung
