... and then the hurdles

It’s an overcast, grey start to the day and quite chilly. There is no rain at the moment but it is forecast again for this afternoon. Although we had a good amount yesterday we still need plenty more. We schooled a number of horses first lot at the Links and all went well. The rest have been kept to Racecourse Side. We have had lots of visitors in this morning to see their horses and they were all pleased with how well and fit they look.

Belle Bayeux

It was a great first day at Chester with, as usual, a couple of high class horses who put themselves into the Classic picture. It is a unique track which often brings horses alight and the two clear cut winners we saw yesterday, in both the Oaks and Derby trial, were a great example. Both lightly raced, the good pace these races are usually run at and always on a turn, can get horses to show big improvement. It certainly happened yesterday and I think if the ground is not too firm at Epsom, they will both perform with credit. Whether they would be quite good enough waits to be seen, but it looks to me like there is still improvement to come. We have another great days racing there today and if you have never been, it is very well worth making the effort.

Velvet Voice

Everybody at Frankland Lodge and Dullingham Park, plus I am sure everybody who has ever come in contact with the legend who is Sheikh Michael Bowring, would like to send huge congratulations. It is his 80th birthday today and Angie and I have been delighted that we got to spend it with him and hope he has had a marvellous day looking at his horses in training and on the stud. Mike has been an owner for 30 years, having at least 50 winners and, although we have had the odd slow one, the vast majority of horses he has been involved with, and his equally famous mother, have done remarkably well. His beloved Babodana was certainly his favourite and his Lincoln Handicap win and numerous Group placings still live long in the memory. Happy Birthday Mike and I can’t wait for your 90th.
