It’s a bright start and the temperature is rising as we speak. Thunderstorms are predicted for later on in the day with plenty of heavy rain. It will be interesting to see whether we get what is forecast as it could be very hit and miss. It’s been another good morning with the horses. We had a few though the stalls just after six o’clock and the rest have been cantering on the all-weather tracks close to home. Apart from one, which was a bit scratchy, they have all been moving fluently and well.

It’s the first day of Royal Ascot. To me this is always the best day with three Group 1’s on the card. Both Richard and I will be doing our best to point you in the right direction, but every horse will be doing its utmost today and we will start to see the effect of the draw and ground as the meeting goes on. There will be a lot of disappointed professionals going home tonight but the ones that run well will have a feeling that is priceless. Our efforts are below to the usual £10 win and double odds on the last. May the best man win.

It must be a sign of the times but I have been an honorary member of the Yorkshire Racing Club for over 30 years and it is disappointing to tell you that, due to lack of support, they have had to call a halt and disband the club. The funds that they have accumulated over the years have all gone off to good charities. This club used to get great turnouts for their evenings and I have been there several times in the past where their enthusiasm shone through. However, with the younger people of today relying on more mobile information units, these evenings have slowly got less and less participants. Somehow there must be another way to encourage people to become involved in group ownership. I think it would take off if the rewards were there, but with the prize money still very much below par in this country, it is always a struggle to get syndicates off the ground.
