Onwards and upwards ...

Plenty of rain overnight...

Two Heathmen discussing the going with MHT

Plenty of rain overnight and the morning started with it pouring down but by second lot it had started to calm down. I think it will just be one of those showery weekends but it is not cold and there is no wind. There has been plenty of activity on the Heath first lot as usual. The tractor men were busy keeping the artificials in good shape with the heathmen, when they were not talking to me, treading in the footings on the grass canters.

We have been using Warren Hill grass canter this morning, as it is in reasonable shape. The marker discs are moved by the heathmen twice daily to keep giving us fresh ground, so you would have thought that the lads would know this and always try to come up the better ground. I always tell them that the side of the gallop where I stand is the side that I want them to come up; however, you would be amazed by the results. I think it is starting to sink in at long last to my staff but they do have to be reminded on a regular basis.

Great racing today, especially at Newbury, where you have got the Tote Sport Trophy at 3.35 pm. Phil has gone for Soldatino and I think Final Approach must have a bit of a chance. I also like the look of Zanir each way but it is a tremendously hard handicap to sort out and will be a great race to watch. There is also a very good supporting card and the racing at Leopardstown with its four Grade 1 races will make this afternoon compulsive viewing.

Mystery Star (Iain)

I see Betfair are giving some money to the Yorkshire racecourses. It looks like another effort to try and disguise the fact that they don't pay the right amount to racing. It seems to me that they are drip feeding chunks of money to varying places in an effort to hide this fact. The sooner the Government can get to grips with this very successful company or they themselves can sort it out to racing's benefit the better.

Astromoon (Abbi)

We won't say much about football today, only that Arsenal are at home to Wolves and The Owls are away to Rochdale. My only hope is that Gracie Fields is playing in goal for them!
